Flaming June Sheiks update!

Well here we are at the end of June and so much has happened for The Voodoo Sheiks. The year started off with some new venues being played. BB’s Blues Club & The Oval Tavern being just two of them along with gigs at The Beaverwood Club, Chislehurst supporting Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack and The Boom Boom Club, Sutton as guests to BabaJack.

We have now been asked to support Laurence Jones in October http://www.laurencejonesmusic.com at The Beaverwood Club & The Boom Boom Club. He is one of the country’s top up and coming Blues maestros and is certainly one to look out for.

We were taken onboard by Golly Gallagher of GFI Promotions which subsequently saw the official release of our album ‘Borrowed & New’.  Through this we have had lots of airplay on various Blues Radio Stations resulting in us sitting at number 17 in the Blues Internet Radio Chart.

‘Borrowed & New’ has had some very favourable reviews around the country all of which can be viewed on our Facebook page. The most recent being in the pages of Bass & Guitar Magazine and the July issue of Blues Matters Magazine.

Whilst we continue gigging and building for the future we are now looking ahead to recording a new album early next year and have been writing some great new tunes some of which have already featured in our live set.

Our website is due for an overhaul in July so keep an eye out for some new information and images etc. but most importantly keep supporting The Voodoo Sheiks.

Come and see us and say hi- everyone welcome!

Rock those Blues

Continuing Rocking The Blues for 2014!

Well 2013 was a great year for The Voodoo Sheiks.  Our album ‘Borrowed & New’ has been selling by the box full and is still selling.  We had a great time at Ridge Radio playing an acoustic set and having fun with Bob & Jules.  http://www.ridgeradio.dreamhosters.com/

In September The Voodoo Sheiks were invited to play on the Bandstand in Horsham as part of the Rock-a-Hula event featuring ‘The Almost Elvis’ Band. Then venturing down to Swanage saw us play a showcase set at The Swanage Blues Festival as part of Stan’s Blues Jamboree.

In between all those events was some great regular gigging, songwriting and general good times.  On the songwriting front, we are continuing to add to our already gig honed original material, which has been very well received.

So as 2014 kicks off, so do The Voodoo Sheiks.  We have several new venues to play with more in the pipeline as well as some old favourites.

So here’s to a busy and fulfilling year ahead where we can continue to fly the flag for British R&B!!

Keep on Rocking those Blues!

The Voodoo Sheiks up and running!

Hey there Voodoo Sheiks fans!  We hope you had a good summer.

We’ve been busy writing some new material to go with the already road tested originals from our album ‘Borrowed & New’, available by contacting us direct.  We even managed to slip one of the new songs in on a recent gig and we’re glad to say it went down a storm.

The gigs have been steady through out the summer and have allowed us to continue fine tuning our high octane set.  We had a great review in ‘Blues in Britain’ magazine. Check it out on our Facebook page.

We have also bagged a show case slot at The Swanage Blues festival in October, so we are looking forward to that!

As the year enters its last phase we have a good run of gigs.  So check out the gig listings on our website and pencil in your favourite one to attend and we’ll see you there.

Keep it Live & Loud!!

A return for some radio blah! blah!

We recently had the pleasure of being asked to appear on Ridge Radio (ridgeradio.co.uk), an internet station based in Caterham, Surrey.  Bob Wilson & Jules Maidment who run the ‘Rock On The Ridge’ show on a Saturday evening are long ‘suffering’ fans of ours and have seen us play on quite a few occasions.

Bob & Jules based the whole show around our album ‘Borrowed & New’ and asked us about our influences and future aspirations as a band.  The show was well received and you can hear the show in full right here https://soundcloud.com/adrian-thomas-6/rock-on-the-ridge-with-the

The extra good news is that we have been invited back on to the show on Saturday April 13th to play some acoustic numbers live.  It starts at 8.00pm and goes through until 10.00pm.

We are really looking forward it and hope you will tune it and let us know your thoughts.

Keep on rocking those blues!!

The recording of our first album- Borrowed & New

The Voodoo Sheiks are pleased to announce that we have recorded an album of both original material and some covers taken from our set.  The album is called ‘Borrowed & New’

Here is a short diary of events of the recording experience:

On Thursday November 22nd 2012 The Voodoo Sheiks arrived at Platform Studio in Hurst to start recording our first album.  Damon Sawyer with his co-pilot Beccy Brennan were about to work their recording, production and engineering magic on us.

After setting all the gear up in the various rooms we got to work.  Over the next few days we would aim to record 5 original songs plus 7 ‘live’ songs from our set.

Day one: We recorded all the drums and most of the bass for the originals.  John and Andy putting in some top rhythm section chops to lay the foundation.  This was was of course fuelled by a few coffees and tons of enthusiasm.

Day Two: We started by finishing the bass tracks.  Damon then set us up in the live room and recorded 7 songs.  The idea was to get that live energy from our gigs onto the album.  We definitely succeeded in that!

The rest of the day was laying down the guitar tracks for the originals.  Adrian was firing on all cylinders with some tight rhythm chops and blistering lead solos.

Day Three: Vocals, backing vocals and blues harp was next on the agenda.  Dave pulling out all the stops on the lead vocals and sounding amazing.   Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better he was onto the harp and laying down some smooth lines.  Finally onto the backing vocals to add that little something.

Day Four: Mixing and Mastering.  Damon was at the helm and putting the final touches to the tracks.

We certainly had a great time in the studio and look forward to doing again in the near future.

A big thanks to Damon & Beccy at Platform Studio.  www.platformstudio.co.uk

Keep it real, play live!

High energy British R&B and Texas Blues at its best

If you want see a band who always give 100% then look no further.  The Voodoo Sheiks are just that band!  Regardless of venue size or capacity, The Voodoo Sheiks always give a high energy performance.

After a busy 1st weekend in May we had a quiet rest of May and June.   We recently kicked things off again in July at The Nags Head in Sunningdale.  It was a Sunday afternoon 5.15pm start and as always things got of to a flyer and 2 great sets of music were delivered much to the delight of the post Wimbledon crowd.  We are back there on October 26th and again on Feb 1st 2013.

Our next few months takes us to The Royal Oak in Bracknell for our 2nd outing there.  Followed by a trip down to Billingshurst in Horsham to the Railway Inn.  This is a first gig at this venue and kicks of several trips to Horsham venues in the coming months.

Another outing at The Bull in Bracknell is on the cards for August.  Followed by our aforementioned tour of Horsham, taking in The Malt Shovel and The Tanners Arms climaxing at The Festival Of Sound in Horsham town centre on September 2nd.  We have been invited to play on the Piries Place – Blues, Jazz & Soul stand at 6pm.

We are currently writing some original material with a view to going into the recording studio towards the end of the year.  This is something that we are really focusing on and are very excited about so keep tuning in for the latest news on all events.

Keeping it live and very real.

Rock on!

Onwards, upwards and forwards

A quarter of the calendar gone and The Voodoo Sheiks have been working hard to add some new tunes to the set and freshen up the gig list.  The new tunes have been going down well and we will continue to give it our full blown Voodoo Sheiks treatment every time.

Having said farewell to The Star in Ewell with a blistering gig at the end of January we moved through Feb with ease and spent time adding some more great new tunes to the already brimming set.

We rocked up at The Station Hotel in South Nutfield!!, yeah me neither, and was greeted with an eclectic mix of people coming to see the latest addition to their village roster.  We and they were not disappointed either as a thoroughly great evening was had by all.  Then off to The Bull in Bracknell once more and as mentioned in previous news this is always a lively gig and it often throws up the odd surprise!!

The Voodoo Sheiks finished off March with a short set gig at The Swan in Farnborough which subsequently got us invited to play there as part of their Swanfest (see gig list for more details) and then onto The Tanners Arms in Horsham.  A real music venue where the people really do come to see the bands play and appreciate you blowing their ears off with some sharp edged British R&B and Texas Blues.  We are back there on September 1st for another cracking night.

We are heading back down to The Fountain in Chichester on April 20th and are looking forward to playing this great lively venue once again.  Then onto the Boot in Bracknell on April 28th.  It’s been a while since we played there so should be another good night.

May 5th sees The Voodoo Sheiks doing a double whammy.  We have a 1pm gig as part of the previously mentioned Swanfest in Farnborough where we will be playing a 45minute set and then off to The Bull in Bracknell for a 9pm full Voodoo Sheiks Set which will contain the usual high energy rocking blues.

As ever keep in touch on Facebook and of course tune in to the website for all the gigs, news, videos and more.

See you down there!!
